Ticketed by a Speed Camera in Maryland? Think About It.

If you have been ticketed and have not know what to do about it, you might want to think about standing your ground in court.

Recently, a Montgomery County cop told me that the company that puts these cameras in place has a direct deal with the county council, not with the police, and since it is such a productive revenue stream, the council has been overlooking the fact that the company has installed cameras outside the allowable half mile area.  Well, the newsman say he’s right.

And as a friend pointed out, the last line of the article states that “net revenues collected from fines generated by speed cameras in work zones will go to an account for state police roadside enforcement activities.”

The guy I spoke with was not a state cop, but from Montgomery County.  Anyone familiar with government bureaucracies knows the internecine warfare that takes place surrounding money and influence.  This whole deal looks like the state cops may have essentially been “paid off” to support this initiative, while the county cops are left on the short end of the stick.  Putting my Gen X skeptic hat on, I’d say the county cops must not have had the political leverage to threaten things enough to need to be paid off.  Know what I’m saying?

Of course, I don’t want to judge these people, but it seems to deserve inquiry by someone who has the time and ability to do so.  Or you could just respond like my man here. (Link not rated G; Kerrin–you gotta love your man’s T-shirt representin’ your peeps!)

Lastly, wanted to go off on a little tangent thought here.  Please indulge me some room in your mind for a moment…Imagine the temptation of a global bureaucracy to avert the rule of law to increase their revenue streams?  To my liberal friends who find capitalism so oppressive to the weak and so nurturing to our innate greed, what do you think a large socialiast bureaucracy will do?  Where do you think the checks-and-balances will come from if the government dwarfs the marketplace, the family, the church, and every other structure that serves the sovereign individual citizen?

  2. Yeah – sadly, I got tagged by a Montgomery County camera for exceeding speed limit – decided not to challenge it since I was probably guilty of speeding.

The bigger issue is the issue of governance of the use of this technology in light of the conflict of interest that exists. Where is the checks and balances against abuse?
