Could not agree with you more, ESL. I suspect it will take a new group of Christian leaders--probably not pastors or institutional leaders--to change the game here and articulate how and why the Christian witness must stand distinct from the conservative/GOP political message, or even the liberal/DEM platform.

I am reading a book along this like by Darryl Hart entitled A Secular Faith: Why Christianity Favors the Separation of Church and State. It came highly recommended to me by a friend of Hart, and even in the early pages I have found it both challenging and liberating along this very line. Something for you and others to consider reading as well.

Just came across this blog and dialogue at De Regno Christi about Hart's book as well, which may serve as a quick intro to his thought on the matter.

When Christians identify exclusively with a political party or political ideology, we run the risk of being directed by something other than a gospel perspective.

This has characterized much under the Bush administration ranging from culture wars to US global engagement. I've heard so many Christians defend the war in Iraq, with passion equal or exceeding their passionate defense of the gospel. Others are emotionally invested in the GOP with a passion equal or exceeding their passion for the church. Something disconcerting about that kind of passion.

Yes, the current administration has its own serious problems but as Christians, learning to engage their missteps constructively is as important as the topics itself.
